Kaiser Permanente's pediatric oncology department is designed to lower stress and make visits feel as safe and comforting as possible. Employing natural color palettes and materials, ZGF's designers were looking for sound that could enliven keys spaces with natural environments.
For the floor's waiting areas, MorrowSound installed dynamic non-repeating soundscapes of open fields and meadows, forest breezes, gentle seashores, and a wide assortment of songbirds. In the oncology treatment areas, where patients can be sitting for many hours at a time, natural soundscapes are organized by species. Animals found in forest canopies, like orangutans and gibbons, are followed by katydids or tree frogs along the floor. As the scenes shift between animals, the spatial interest in the space also changes, providing a gentle sense of motion over time.
